If you have ever had a punctured tire ruin your day, then the idea of self-sealing tires should sound like a dream come true. The all-new 2020 Ford Explorer will be available with new Michelin® Selfseal® tires, which are designed with a rubber sealant that can automatically seal small punctures to slow the rate of air leakage.
“Nothing derails a family vacation like a flat tire,” said Joseph Billman, Ford wheel and tire engineer. “Explorer is the ultimate road trip family hauler — and it’s the perfect fit for these new Michelin® Selfseal® tires.”
The Explorer will be the first SUV in the world to offer these innovative tires. They will come standard on both the Explorer Platinum and Explorer Limited Hybrid four-wheel-drive models. They will be available as an option on the Explorer Limited model.
Michelin® Selfseal® tires can help you avoid potentially dangerous roadside stops, loss of vehicle control, and the time you lose changing your tire or waiting for a tow truck. The tires can seal 90 percent of punctures up to a quarter-inch in diameter. This can potentially slow the loss of pressure to about 15 pounds per square inch in a week.
With these tires, if you do get a puncture, it can give you time to repair or replace the damaged tire on your time, when it is more convenient. This means finishing your well-deserved family road trip in confidence and safety.
